Massage is the systematic and scientific manipulation of the soft tissues in the body. The purpose of massage is to relieve any physiological, mechanical, and psychological effects the body might be facing. It is also used to release any imbalances the body is encountering internally from the external environment. All of those imbalances are regulated through the use of massage by relaxing the body and reducing certain types of edema.

Metabolically, the muscles maintain a chemical imbalance through normal activities. As the muscles contract they rid themselves of toxins by “milking” these acids into the lymphatic and venous flow. Streaming toward the heart, in turn, pushes the blood, lymph, and by-products are cleared away. As the muscles relax, fresh blood flows into the channels bringing necessary nutrition to the area.

Over activity disturbs this balance by not allowing a sufficient relaxation time for the inflow of nutritive products. At the same time, due to exertion, toxic products are formed faster than they can be eliminated. Thus, the muscles are now loaded with irritant acids, which causes the muscles to fatigue quicker than normal.

Following extreme activity, these irritant acids can be fed back into the venous return by massage therapy. Often the “lameness” that follows abnormal activity could be lessened or even prevented by massage immediately following the activity, since the muscles can strain by fatigue. In addition, massage can be used to prepare healthy muscles for strenuous sports activities or to assist in the after effect of such activities.

Under activity, also disturbs this balance by not allowing the “milking” effect. Therefore, the irritant products are not carried away as they should be and the muscles become more and more stagnant. In various situations, inactivity occurs, massage can mechanically assist the “milking” process. Massage will physiologically relieve pain, and metabolically prepare the muscles for exercise to the fullest capacity.

Therapeutic massage is becoming a large part of the health care trend. This trend includes a holistic approach to the self-care philosophy of keeping the body well. This is done through exercise, nutrition, relaxation, and the reduction of stress. Stress is the number one cause of medical illnesses. Massage will relieve stress because the primary goal of massage therapy is relaxation of the individual.
